| KAPAWI ECOLODGE AND
RESERVE |
Kapawi Ecolodge and Reserve is one
of the best examples of ecotourism
in the Amazon. Located in the remotest
area of the Ecuadorian Amazon, Kapawi
is a pioneer community-based ecotourism
example. Kapawi opened in 1996, and
offers a chance to experience the
Amazon rainforest and to learn about
the Achuar people and its relationship
with their environment. Built according
to Achuar traditional concepts, Kapawi
can accommodate up to 40 people in
20 cabins with balcony and private
bathrooms. A joint partnership between
a private company and the Achuar Indigenous
Nationality, it will be operated by
the private company until 2011, when
the Achuar will completely take over
management of the Ecolodge.
There is no fixed itinerary, once
at Kapawi you will decide with your
bilingual guide and group members
(up to 8 people per group) what to
do among a list of daily activities:
hikes of varying length during the
day and at nigh time, canoeing, bird watching,
caiman-watching, cultural visits,
camping, catch-and-release fishing,
and hammocking (enjoying nature from
the hammock in your balcony).
To get to Kapawi, you fly from the
airport in Quito on a chartered plane
to a community inside the Achuar territory,
1.5-million acres of Amazon rainforest
still unharmed by western culture.
From there you follow a boat ride
to the ecolodge. Several routes can
be taken depending on the number of
guests going to Kapawi.
